Panamanian Photographer Wins Contest with 'Empollerada' and Siu Mai Photo

A young photographer from Panama won first prize in a contest held by the Chinese Embassy. His work, depicting local fashion and Chinese cuisine, symbolizes the friendship between the two nations.

Melvin Abdiel Mendoza, a 25-year-old photographer from Santiago de Veraguas, presented his vision of the relationship between the two nations in an original photograph featuring an 'empollerada' (a local term for a fashionably and provocatively dressed woman) and the traditional Chinese food 'siu mai'. 'Let's go for siu mai' was the title of the photograph that earned him first place in the annual contest organized by the Chinese Embassy in Panama to promote relations between the two nations. Prior to the award ceremony, guests enjoyed lion dance, tai chi, and guzheng performances, as well as participated in Chinese cultural activities such as calligraphy and musical games. Chinese Ambassador Xu Xueyuan stated that the submitted works vividly reflect the China-Panama friendship in all its dimensions and the endless possibilities of bilateral relations. Álvaro Alvarado was also awarded in the Vlog category, and Eriksel Alveo in painting.
