An explosion occurred in the boiler room of Santo Tomás Hospital in Panama. There are no injuries, but the sterilization center was damaged. The hospital will temporarily reduce surgeries and coordinate support with other medical centers.


Explosion at Santo Tomás Hospital

At 1:00 PM this Tuesday, February 10, 2026, an explosion occurred in the boiler and machinery area of Santo Tomás Hospital (HST). Immediately, the HST Risk Management team activated safety protocols, proceeding with the preventive evacuation of personnel working in the area. In a timely manner, units from the Meritorious Fire Corps of Panama, Calidonia station, arrived at the scene and managed to control the blaze. Fortunately, the incident left no one injured, with only material damage and the sterilization center being affected, which will force a temporary reduction in the surgery schedule. In response to this situation, Santo Tomás Hospital will coordinate support with the Children's Hospital, the City of Health, and San Miguel Arcángel Hospital for the sterilization of surgical instruments and equipment, in order to ensure the continuity of medical care. Santo Tomás Hospital will keep the public informed as the corresponding technical evaluations are carried out.
