Panamanian Resident Doctors Demand Timely Payment

Members of the National Federation of Resident and Intern Doctors (Fenameri) held an urgent meeting yesterday, Thursday, with authorities from the Social Security Fund (CSS) to address delays in the payment of extra shifts and the retention of payrolls, a problem affecting trainee doctors nationwide and causing concern within the medical community. The meeting took place at the National Directorate of Teaching and Research, in the City of Health, and included key figures from the administration: the national executive director of Human Resources, Rosilda Robinson, and the national director of Teaching and Research, Paulino Vigil De Gracia. According to Fenameri, these issues directly impact the financial stability of interns and residents, who depend on these payments to cover personal and professional expenses. In response, the guild requested its members to rigorously monitor administrative processes, emphasizing the submission of payrolls within the first five business days of each month. Additionally, Fenameri set up a reporting channel via WhatsApp (6243-5681) for doctors to document specific cases of late payments. On the medical guild's side, the delegation was led by the president of Fenameri, Nicolás García, accompanied by representatives from different regions of the country. During the meeting, several critical bottlenecks were identified that have hindered the payment flow: the retention of payrolls in the medical services secretariats, delays in local Human Resources units, delays in the process of changing residents' categories, and failures in the return of documents from various training centers across the country. The demonstration aims to bring visibility to the situation and demand concrete responses from the CSS. The president of Fenameri, Nicolás García, stated that the guild will follow up on each case and evaluate the CSS's response in the coming days. This information will be consolidated and presented at the next meeting, scheduled for Tuesday, April 7, to assess the compliance of management times by Human Resources. The guild reiterated that it will maintain a respectful and constructive dialogue with the authorities, but under the firm slogan of guaranteeing sustainable solutions that ensure the timely payment of interns and residents nationwide. As part of the pressure, Fenameri called for a national peaceful demonstration on Thursday, April 9, at 3:00 p.m., which will be held simultaneously in the premises of all hospitals in the country. The demonstration scheduled for Thursday is poised to be a turning point in the demand for timely payments.
