Panama's Construction Union Fights Dissolution Attempt

Panama's construction workers' union, Suntracs, is fighting back against government attempts to dissolve it, presenting evidence in court to support its case. The union vows to exhaust all legal options if the case goes against them.

Panama's construction workers' union, Suntracs, has presented evidence to the Judicial Branch to oppose its dissolution process. The union's lawyer, Rolando Murgas, stated that the organization is exercising its right to defend itself against a lawsuit that lacks factual and legal grounds. Murgas emphasized that they have proof demonstrating the union has continued to fulfill its purposes, thus dismissing all arguments for its dissolution. The union's secretary general, Yamir Córdoba, noted that they will pursue all available legal avenues in case of an adverse decision. Suntracs has recently led protests against social security reforms, open-pit mining, and a U.S. agreement deemed harmful to sovereignty. In February, the International Labour Organization (ILO) reported violations of union freedom in Panama, prompting its experts' commission to call for measures to restore the union's operations.
