USS Nimitz Visit to Panama: Strengthening Security Cooperation

The visit was highlighted by authorities from Panama and the United States as a demonstration of cooperation in maritime security and the fight against transnational crime.

"We are in Panama as guests and also as security partners," stated the minister. This marks a significant event that underscores bilateral cooperation in regional security.

Minister of Security Frank Ábrego emphasized the significance of the ship's presence. "Freedom can only exist where there is security," he affirmed, noting that the visit of the USS Nimitz reaffirms a historical relationship based on trust, mutual respect, and a shared commitment to peace and regional stability. "This visit is part of our cooperation to enhance regional security and prosperity throughout the American continent," said U.S. Rear Admiral Norman Cassi.

The officer, along with Minister of Public Security Frank Ábrego, participated in an event held at the Amador cruise terminal, at the entrance to the Pacific side of the Panama Canal, where the USS Gridley destroyer, part of the USS Nimitz's strike group, docked.

Panama: A Strategic Partner

During his remarks, Cassi stressed the importance of Panama as a strategic partner in the region. "Without a partner like Panama, we cannot accomplish this mission," he expressed, while acknowledging the country's key role in global trade and expressing his expectation that bilateral cooperation will continue to strengthen.

The United States is the primary user of the Panama Canal, with nearly 70% of the cargo transiting the interoceanic route originating from or destined for that country.

The nuclear-powered aircraft carrier USS Nimitz arrived in Panamanian waters, where it will remain until April 2 as part of the multinational Southern Seas 2026 exercise.
