Panama and the United States have reaffirmed their commitment to maritime security and the fight against transnational crime following the recent visit of the USS Nimitz aircraft carrier. Panama's Minister of Public Security, Frank Ábrego, highlighted the historical nature of bilateral relations, which are based on trust, mutual respect, and a shared commitment to peace and regional stability. U.S. Rear Admiral Norman Cassi, in turn, emphasized the importance of Panama as a strategic partner whose role in global trade is key to mission success. The visit, part of the multinational exercise 'Southern Seas 2026', demonstrates the close cooperation between the two nations in ensuring security and prosperity across the American continent.
The United States is the primary user of the Panama Canal, accounting for nearly 70% of the cargo transiting the interoceanic route. The nuclear-powered aircraft carrier USS Nimitz arrived in Panamanian waters, where it will remain until April 2. Its strike group also includes the USS Gridley destroyer, which docked at the Amador cruise terminal at the entrance to the Pacific Canal.
