Panamanian Authorities Close Bridge of the Americas for Inspection After Fire

Panamanian authorities have temporarily closed the Bridge of the Americas for a technical inspection after a fire caused by an explosion of tankers. This measure aims to guarantee user safety and determine the condition of the structure following the incident.

Traffic and Mobility Operations Due to the temporary road closure, the Transit and Land Transportation Authority (ATTT) implemented a lane reversal operation via the Centenario Bridge. This action aims to alleviate the vehicle flow towards the West Panama province during the night and will be resumed at 5:00 a.m. this Tuesday, April 7th, to facilitate travel to the capital city.

Labor Considerations and Flexibility The President of the Republic, José Raúl Mulino, stated through his official channels the need for both the public and private sectors to maintain special considerations for workers. Mulino highlighted that employee commutes will be complex and expressed his commitment to restoring normality as soon as possible, remaining at the forefront of priority actions coordinated by various authorities.

Technical Structure Assessment The Ministry of Public Works (MOP) ordered the suspension of vehicle traffic to conduct forensic pathology tests to determine the solidity of the concrete structure, its metallic components, and the pavement layer. This specialized technical inspection is an essential preventive measure to verify whether the heat from the fire affected the integrity of the elevated passage.
