Panama Leads Energy Integration in Latin America

The Secretary of Energy of Panama emphasizes the country's commitment to regional energy integration, highlighting the electrical interconnection project with Colombia and the need for updated regulations. This initiative aims to provide sustainable energy solutions for Central and South America, ensuring affordable and reliable energy access.

At the meeting of the Regional Operating Entity of the Central American Electric Market in El Salvador, the Secretary of Energy of Panama highlighted the importance of the Electric Interconnection with Colombia, a project involving both countries that could be fundamental for energy integration in the region. Panama is willing to lead this process and strengthen Regional Energy Integration, also assessing new interconnection opportunities beyond Costa Rica.

The Secretary called for modernizing the regulatory framework of the Central American Countries' Electric Interconnection System (SIEPAC), emphasizing Panama's commitment to sustainable and efficient planning for its energy growth. Additionally, he pointed out the importance of regional energy integration to ensure affordable, reliable, and sustainable energy for all.

Panama has invested in key infrastructure to store and distribute natural gas, which has increased its generation capacity and consolidated its position as a strategic supplier for Central America. The country has also strengthened its Transmission System to ensure efficient evacuation of generated energy, thus ensuring stability and competitive prices.

The Secretary emphasized the need to broaden the conversation to more countries in the region and to collaborate on investment to mutually benefit. He highlighted the planning and regulatory challenges facing the region, calling for ambitious thinking and an interconnected network from Central America to South America.

The interconnection project with Colombia would use advanced transmission technology to ensure efficiency and stability, avoiding environmental impacts in the Darién jungle. The Secretary highlighted the importance of long-term energy planning and the need to adapt regulations to new market conditions, promoting the integration and development of renewable energies and liquefied natural gas (LNG) to ensure a reliable supply and remain a strong player in energy exports.
