Panama Cleans Drains to Prevent Flooding

The maintenance team of the Ministry of Public Works (MOP) carried out cleaning of storm drains and sewers in the José Domingo Espinar community in the corregimiento of Cristóbal, Colón, with the aim of minimizing flooding. Due to heavy precipitation in recent days, several sections have been affected, mainly hindering free vehicular circulation. This work first seeks to improve stormwater drainage and secondly to minimize flooding during the rainy season. During the works, sediment, garbage, and accumulated material that obstructed water flow were removed, thus ensuring better drainage system performance and benefiting the families of this sector. Authorities stated that these efforts are part of a continuous maintenance plan to strengthen the stormwater infrastructure and protect the community from heavy rain events. During this rainy season, river overflows and homes being flooded have also been reported.
