The author moved from Los Angeles to Panama to teach English. While adapting easily in the capital, they struggled in a small coastal town called Playa Venao. Initially, they enjoyed meeting tourists from all over the world, but once the novelty wore off, they felt like an outsider. Not being a surfer, a popular topic, and struggling to find a place between the transient tourists and the tight-knit local community led to feelings of loneliness. Over time, by focusing on gratitude, living in the moment, and attending community events, the author built meaningful connections. They realized that embracing uncomfortable situations and appreciating every moment could lead to unexpected peace and happiness. Eventually, they found the community they craved and stayed in Playa Venao for about a year.
