“Every life lost is a warning that safety is everyone’s responsibility.”The minister also highlighted the work of more than 30,000 men and women from the Public Force, along with strategic allies, who worked tirelessly to maintain security in neighborhoods, roads, and communities.Ten people lost their lives during the carnival, a figure 37.5% lower than the 16 recorded last year, reflecting a reduction in fatalities and an 80% decrease in deaths from traffic accidents.Of the deceased, five were murdered, four drowned, and one more lost their life in a traffic accident.During the festival days, 149,000 vehicles moved into the country's interior.Mobility and control of these roads were a huge challenge for the authorities, as noted by the Minister of Public Security, Frank Alexis Abrego.“The Panamanian State acted in an articulated and preventive manner, with a presence throughout the country, not just in carnival zones. The operation was national and permanent,” he said.A total of 428 accidents were recorded and 8,222 fines were imposed, a number that shows that despite prevention, many risked their lives on the streets and roads.Abrego insisted that numbers are not to be celebrated: “We do not celebrate numbers; we assume our duty.”
