Panama closed 2025 with 28 deaths from dengue, representing a 51.8% reduction compared to 2024, when 54 deaths were reported. Additionally, the country registered 16,262 dengue cases, a figure considerably lower than the 32,361 cases recorded in 2024, reported the Ministry of Health (Minsa). According to the Minsa Epidemiology Department technician, Lizbeth Cerezo, these figures reflect “a substantial improvement in dengue control in Panama”, largely resulting from the active participation of the community in eliminating mosquito breeding sites. “More than 90% of the control of the disease depends on the actions of the population,” the official highlighted in an official statement, which also emphasized the importance of inter-institutional collaboration and the implementation of integrated strategies among health sector entities and other public and private institutions. The official report also revealed a significant decrease in pressure on the hospital system, decreasing from 2,669 hospitalizations in 2024 to 1,617 in 2025, equivalent to a 39% reduction, as a direct consequence of the decrease in severe dengue cases.
