637 Dengue Cases and Two Deaths in Panama

Panama has recorded 637 cases of dengue so far in 2026. The national incidence rate has reached 13.5 cases per 100,000 inhabitants. Authorities are sounding the alarm due to the rising number of cases, especially among young people.

A total of 637 cases have been accumulated nationwide. The national incidence rate is 13.5 cases per 100,000 inhabitants, figures that are concerning as we are just starting 2026. The Metropolitan Region leads the list with 155 cases, followed by Bocas del Toro (78), San Miguelito (76), Panamá Oeste (72), and Colón (62). In Bocas del Toro, there are 27 cases, while Guabito and Puerto Caimito each have 20 cases. The most affected group in terms of numbers are young adults. Other regions include Herrera (48), Panamá Norte (38), Chiriquí (38), Panamá Este (27), Veraguas (12), Coclé (12), Los Santos (10), Kuna Yala (6), Ngäbe-Buglé (2), and Darién (1). By districts, the situation is hot in Tocumen with 32 cases, followed by 24 de Diciembre and Belisario Frías with 31 each. Dengue is no joke. However, the highest rate is in the 15 to 19 age group, with 18.2 cases per 100,000 inhabitants. The symptoms are: fever, severe headache, muscle pain, and pain behind the eyes. Most are without warning signs, but there are already 72 with warning signs and 1 severe case that has triggered alerts. There are also 74 hospitalized people and a total of 2 deaths so far this year. The 25 to 34 age group sums 111 cases and the 35 to 49 age group records 113, which represents 35% of the total. Dengue can get complicated quickly. The recommendation is clear: do not self-medicate and go to a health center if you suspect you have it.
