Panama's Comptroller Confirms Audit of Municipal Transfers

The Comptroller General of Panama, Anel Flores, confirmed that audits requested by the Minister of Economy and Finance, Felipe Chapman, will be conducted to review the use of $6.9 million in recent transfers to municipalities and community boards. Flores indicated that the review will be carried out with the same rigor applied in reports from the previous government. The Comptroller stated that the municipal transfers are legal and traceable, and that any irregularities will be found once the auditors complete their work. There will be no 'friends' or 'enemies' here. This is about public money: oversight will be equal, regardless of who governed before or who governs today. Regarding the allegations of a possible parallel decentralization, as occurred in the past government, Flores said: 'You are seeing the speck in your brother's eye but do not notice the plank in your own.' He recalled that some of those who are now demanding transparency have not even submitted their spending reports, citing a lack of time or pending documents.
