Panama Government Takes Control of Waste Collection in San Miguelito

The mayor of San Miguelito expressed concern over the government's decision for direct control of waste collection starting January 19. The sanitation authority assures that rates will not change and calls on residents to seek clarification.

The mayor of San Miguelito, Irma Hernández, called for respect for municipal autonomy and established processes. She also stated that the owners of the companies hired to provide the service starting Monday are concerned about the government's announcement.

The Urban Cleaning and Household Waste Authority (AAUD) assured that there will be no increase in the waste collection rate in the San Miguelito district.

For those with questions, they can call today, Wednesday, January 14, 2026, from 2:00 p.m.: to the phones: 6535-1987, WhatsApp: 6535-1761 or write to the email: infosanmiguelito@aaud.gob.pa.

This is because on Tuesday, the Council of Ministers authorized the AAUD to take full control of waste collection operations in San Miguelito starting Monday, January 19, when the contract with Revisalud, the company in charge of this task for the past few years, expires.

«The intervention that was carried out was palliative, but everything indicates that the situation could worsen again after January 19, when the companies to which special contracts were being made may not be ready for the contracts to be signed so they can begin,» stated the AAUD administrator, Ovil Moreno.

Work continues so that the streets do not fill up with garbage and to avoid environmental and health problems.

However, this initiative was not to the liking of Irma Hernández, the mayor of San Miguelito, who also had a disagreement with the comptroller, Anel Flores.

According to the government, this measure seeks to prevent a sanitation crisis and put more than 200,000 residents at risk.

The authority indicates that they will continue with the same operational capacity and commitment.

The AAUD recalled that for the past 14 days, they have been collecting waste that had accumulated at various points in the district.

Cleaning does not stop.
