Panama: Drug Trafficking Hearings

This Monday afternoon, several hearings were held for charges, legalization of apprehensions, and precautionary measures with provisional detentions. These individuals were involved in crimes related to illegal drug trafficking and firearms. In one of the hearings, the case of a Panamanian and a foreign citizen was heard. They were apprehended during a pursuit by anti-drug units of the National Aeronaval Service and the Veraguas Drug Prosecutor's Office in Río Escondido, in the southern part of the Mariato district. From the suspects, more than 1,300 packages of illicit substances, a rifle, and two boats were seized. The hearings for the arraignment in drug-related and other crimes are just the beginning of the investigations. To investigate and gather more evidence, the Public Ministry has six months. Meanwhile, authorities are coordinating surveillance operations along the coasts to curb drug trafficking.
