In Herrera province, over 21,000 students are returning to school this Monday. The 2026 school year has begun nationwide. In the province of Herrera, more than 21,000 students will return to classrooms at 171 educational centers, attended by around 1,800 teachers, according to data provided by the Regional Directorate of the Ministry of Education (Meduca). In recent weeks, education authorities have toured various schools to verify the maintenance and adaptation work carried out over the summer. According to the regional director of education, Daysi Atencio, 58 centers were included in the maintenance plan, with progress exceeding 80% of the scheduled work. Among the highlights for 2026 is the opening of a new school in the La Arena district of Chitré, which will expand educational coverage in one of the areas with the highest population growth in the province. In this sector, the Transit and Land Transport Authority (ATTT) also announced the installation of speed bumps and signage to reduce vehicle speeds and reinforce road safety, due to the increase in pedestrian traffic from students arriving and leaving. The regional director of ATTT in Herrera, Diana Batista, reported that from the first week of school, road safety education campaigns for students will be launched, in addition to having units present in school areas to supervise safe crossings.
