The highlands of Herrera province, specifically in the Chepo community, were the setting for an emotional celebration of the 204th anniversary of Panama's Independence from Spain, commemorated every November 28. The civic ceremony brought together local authorities, invited guests, and students from area educational institutions, who participated with enthusiasm and deep patriotic sentiment. The community gathered from the early hours to be a part of this historic date, which highlights the freedom achieved in 1821. Following the official ceremony, a parade took place through the main streets of Chepo de Las Minas, in which the area's schools participated, and for the first time, the Herberto López Band from José Daniel Crespo College. Their presence was applauded by the large crowd that came to enjoy the event. Chepo's representative, Abilio Cruz, highlighted that this celebration has been held in the community for several years, strengthening identity and patriotic feeling. "We continue to forge the history that began with Panama's independence from Spain; it is a tradition that we keep alive," he expressed. For his part, Jesse Díez, director of José Daniel Crespo College, highlighted the importance of the youth band's participation in this picturesque region, where the La Villa River originates. He pointed out that this presence is a testament to the college's commitment not only to the province but also to environmental protection, as this area is a vital water source for Herrera and Los Santos. Díez extended an invitation to other schools and colleges in the province to join this historic celebration in Chepo next year, reaffirming its cultural and educational value.
