Panama's Labor Minister assures Balboa port workers of job stability

Panama's Labor Minister met with Balboa port workers following a Supreme Court ruling that deemed the port-state contract unconstitutional. She assured them of job security and announced a permanent office for their concerns.

Minister of Labor and Labor Development Jackeline Muñoz toured the port of Balboa (Panama Ports Company) and met with the terminal's workers, assuring them of their job stability. This comes after a Supreme Court ruling declared the contract between the company and the Panamanian state unconstitutional. Muñoz, defining the situation as a national issue, noted that operations at the port of Balboa "have remained active at one hundred percent." She also announced that Mintradel will open a permanent office starting this Friday to address any questions from workers. Muñoz added that she has been working in conjunction with the terminal's labor organizations. Furthermore, the minister indicated that there are 5,000 workers at the port, but clarified that this "does not mean that is the only number, as there are also indirect and operational staff." Muñoz stated that she is traveling to the province of Colón to hold a meeting with the staff at the port of Cristóbal. "Many workers are going to be impacted," she expressed. "Our workforce is showing an important example of how to build a nation and that this is not a temporary situation, but rather an activity inherent to our country," she specified.
