Panamanians hold vigil against Trump

Social groups are preparing to hold a vigil in Plaza 5 de Mayo at 6:00 p.m. in rejection of the plans by the administration of Donald Trump to regain control of the Canal. Panamanians from various organizations will take to the streets this Saturday to protest in defense of the country's sovereignty.

In a statement issued by the organizers, there is a call to the general citizenry to join this peaceful demonstration to show the unity of the Panamanian people against the threat of foreign intervention in matters that concern the country exclusively.

"It is essential that as a nation we show our rejection of any attempt to undermine our sovereignty. The Panama Canal is a symbol of our independence, and we will not allow its control to be jeopardized by foreign interests," expressed one of the leaders of the calling groups.

The vigil will take place in an atmosphere of respect and civility, with slogans and posters reflecting the feelings of Panamanians regarding the importance of maintaining autonomy over this vital interoceanic route for global trade.
